विधिः किल नरम् लोके विधानेन अनुवर्तते ।
यथा अयम् विहितो भक्ष्यः चिरात् मह्यम् उपागतः ॥ ॥४-५६-४॥
Vidhiḥ kila naram loke vidhānena anuvartate । Yathā ayam vihito bhakṣyaḥ cirāt mahyam upāgataḥ ॥ ॥4-56-4॥
Translation
"Indeed, destiny pursues man in this world according to its own laws. Just as this destined food has come to me after a long time."

(संपाति ने सोचा) "संसार में भाग्य (विधि) ही मनुष्य का अपने विधान के अनुसार अनुसरण करता है। जैसे कि यह निश्चित भोजन (भक्ष्य) बहुत समय बाद मेरे पास स्वयं आ गया है।"
English Commentary
Sampati philosophizes on Vidhi (Fate/Destiny). He believes that destiny dictates outcomes regardless of effort, evidenced by the fact that food (bhakṣyaḥ) has arrived at his doorstep without him hunting. The commentary notes that Sampati, being old and wingless (as revealed later), relies on such strokes of luck. His statement terrifies the Vanaras, who hear a giant bird proclaiming them as his "destined meal." It reinforces their belief that death is inevitable, coming now in the form of a beak rather than a sword.

संपाति का यह कथन शुद्ध 'नियतिवाद' (Fatalism) है। वह मानता है कि उसे शिकार के लिए उड़ना नहीं पड़ा (क्योंकि उसके पंख जले हुए हैं), बल्कि 'विधि' (भाग्य) ने भोजन उसके द्वार पर भेज दिया। 'विहितो भक्ष्यः' (निर्धारित भोजन) शब्द बताता है कि वह वानरों को जीवित प्राणी नहीं, बल्कि वस्तु (Object/Food) के रूप में देख रहा है। यह वानरों के लिए आतंक का क्षण है—वे सुग्रीव के दंड से बचने के लिए यहाँ आए थे, लेकिन यहाँ उन्हें एक राक्षस रूपी पक्षी अपना भोजन मान रहा है।
