परंपराणाम् भक्षिष्ये वानराणाम् मृतम् मृतम् ।
उवाच एतत् वचः पक्षी तान् निरीक्ष्य प्लवंगमान् ॥ ॥४-५६-५॥
paramparāṇām bhakṣiṣye vānarāṇām mṛtam mṛtam । uvāca etat vacaḥ pakṣī tān nirīkṣya plavaṃgamān ॥ ॥4-56-5॥
Translation
Upon observing those monkeys, the bird (Sampati) spoke these words: "I shall eat these monkeys one after another as they die in succession."
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन वानरों को देखकर उस पक्षी (सम्पाति) ने यह वचन कहा— "मैं इन वानरों को, जो क्रमानुसार मरेंगे, एक-एक करके भक्षण करूँगा।"
English Commentary
This verse highlights the predatory opportunism of the vulture King Sampati. The Vanaras, already in deep despair and sitting for Prayopavesha (fasting unto death), are viewed by Sampati merely as sustenance. The term "paramparāṇām" implies a sequential order; since Sampati is old and wingless, he intends to wait for them to die one by one to satisfy his hunger. This creates a terrifying atmosphere for the Vanaras, who are trapped between the fear of Sugriva’s punishment, the impassable ocean, and now this looming predator. It sets a scene of absolute hopelessness, serving as a prelude to the dramatic revelation that is about to occur regarding Jatayu.

यहाँ गृध्रराज सम्पाति की उक्ति में क्रूरता और अवसरवाद का चित्रण है। वानर पहले से ही हताश होकर प्रायोपवेश (आमरण अनशन) के लिए बैठे हैं, और सम्पाति उन्हें केवल भोजन की दृष्टि से देख रहा है। "परंपराणाम्" का अर्थ है एक के बाद एक, या क्रम से। सम्पाति वृद्ध है और उड़ने में असमर्थ है, इसलिए वह प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है कि कब वानर प्राण त्यागें और वह अपनी क्षुधा शांत करे। यह श्लोक उस भयानक परिस्थिति को दर्शाता है जिसमें वानर घिर गए हैं—एक तरफ सुग्रीव के दंड का भय, दूसरी तरफ सागर, और अब यह मांसभक्षी पक्षी। यह स्थिति वानरों के धैर्य की चरम परीक्षा है, जहाँ मृत्यु निश्चित प्रतीत होती है।
