रामस्य न कृतम् कार्यम् न कृतम् राज शाशनम् ।
हरीणाम् इयम् अज्ञाता विपत्तिः सहसा आगता ॥ ॥४-५६-८॥
rāmasya na kṛtam kāryam na kṛtam rāja śāśanam । harīṇām iyam ajñātā vipattiḥ sahasā āgatā ॥ ॥4-56-8॥
Translation
"Rama's task has not been accomplished, nor has the King's command been fulfilled. This unforeseen calamity has suddenly befallen the monkeys."

"न तो राम का कार्य ही पूरा हुआ और न ही राजा (सुग्रीव) की आज्ञा का पालन हुआ। वानरों पर यह अनजानी विपत्ति अचानक आ पड़ी है।"
English Commentary
Angada laments the double failure: failing the divine cause of Rama and disobeying the royal decree of King Sugriva. For a warrior and a loyal subject, failing a mission is often viewed as worse than death. The phrase "ajñātā vipattiḥ" (unknown/unforeseen calamity) highlights the unpredictability of their fate. They expected to search and fight, not to starve on a desolate coast and be threatened by a vulture. This verse underscores the burden of responsibility weighing on Angada, where the physical threat of the bird is compounded by the psychological weight of failure and dishonor.

यहाँ अंगद अपने कर्तव्य निर्वाह में असफलता का शोक मना रहे हैं। क्षत्रिय और सेवक के लिए स्वामी का कार्य न कर पाना मृत्यु से भी बड़ा दुख है। "न कृतम् राज शाशनम्" (राजा की आज्ञा का पालन नहीं हुआ) कहकर वे अपनी विफलता स्वीकार करते हैं। "अज्ञाता विपत्तिः" (अनजानी विपत्ति) उस स्थिति को दर्शाती है जिसका उन्होंने कभी अनुमान नहीं लगाया था—कि वे एक निर्जन तट पर, प्यास और भूख से पीड़ित होकर, एक गिद्ध का भोजन बनने के लिए विवश होंगे। यह श्लोक ग्लानि और भय का मिश्रण है, जो अंगद की मानसिक स्थिति को प्रकट करता है।
