मयस्य माया विहितम् तत् बिलम् च विचिन्वताम् ।
व्यतीतः तत्र नः मासः यः राज्ञा समयः कृतः ॥ ॥४-५७-१७॥
Mayasya māyā vihitam tat bilam ca vicinvatām |
Vyatītaḥ tatra naḥ māsaḥ yaḥ rājñā samayaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥4-57-17॥
Translation
While we were searching in that cave created by the magic of Maya (Maya Danava), the time limit of one month fixed by the King (Sugriva) passed away right there.

मय दानव की माया द्वारा निर्मित उस गुफा (ऋक्षबिल) में सीता की खोज करते हुए हमारे लिए राजा सुग्रीव द्वारा निर्धारित एक मास की समयावधि वहीं व्यतीत हो गई।
English Commentary
Angada explains the primary cause of their delay. The reference to 'Mayasya maya vihitam' points to the Rikshabila cave, an illusory subterranean realm where the Vanaras lost track of time while searching for Sita. This verse underscores the strict discipline of the Vanara army and the absolute nature of the King's command. In military strategy, time is a critical resource; losing it to an illusion is seen as a grave failure. The verse sets the context for their despair—they did not fail due to lack of effort, but due to being ensnared by magic, yet the consequence of missing the deadline remains absolute.
