Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ते वयम् कपि राजस्य सर्वे वचन कारिणः ।
कृताम् संस्थाम् अतिक्रान्ता भयात् प्रायम् उपासिताः ॥ ॥४-५७-१८॥
Te vayam kapi rājasya sarve vacana kāriṇaḥ |
Kṛtām saṃsthām atikrāntā bhayāt prāyam upāsitāḥ ॥4-57-18॥
Translation
We are all obedient servants of the Monkey King; however, having transgressed the deadline fixed by him, we have resorted to 'Praya' (fasting unto death) out of fear.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हम सभी वानरराज सुग्रीव की आज्ञा का पालन करने वाले सेवक हैं, किंतु उनके द्वारा निर्धारित मर्यादा (समय सीमा) का उल्लंघन कर देने के कारण, उनके भय से अब हम प्रायोपवेश (आमरण अनशन) पर बैठे हैं।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the tension between loyalty and fear. By calling themselves 'vacana karinah' (doers of the word/command), Angada asserts that they are not rebels. However, having crossed the 'samstham' (established limit/deadline), they face an existential crisis. 'Prayam upasitah' refers to the ritualistic fasting unto death (Prayopavesha). The psychological state of the Vanaras is evident here: the fear of Sugriva’s retribution is so profound that they deem self-immolation through fasting a more honorable and less painful exit than facing their King's wrath after failure.

यह श्लोक 'भय' और 'निष्ठा' के बीच के द्वंद्व को प्रकट करता है। 'वचन कारिणः' पद यह स्पष्ट करता है कि वे विद्रोही नहीं हैं, बल्कि आज्ञाकारी सेवक हैं। 'संस्थाम्' का अर्थ यहां सुग्रीव द्वारा स्थापित नियम या समय-सीमा है। 'प्रायम् उपासिताः' एक अत्यंत गंभीर संकल्प है—बिना जल और अन्न के मृत्यु का आह्वान करना। सुग्रीव का शासन इतना कठोर था कि वानरों को लगा कि खाली हाथ लौटने पर मिलने वाले दंड (मृत्यु) से बेहतर है कि वे स्वयं ही सम्मानपूर्वक प्राण त्याग दें। यह सुग्रीव के 'दण्ड' नीति के आतंक को भी रेखांकित करता है।
