ते प्रायम् उपविष्टाः तु दृष्ट्वा गृध्रम् प्लवंगमाः ।
चक्रुः बुद्धिम् तदा रौद्राम् सर्वान् नः भक्षयिष्यति ॥ ॥४-५७-२॥
Te prāyam upaviṣṭāḥ tu dṛṣṭvā gṛdhram plavaṃgamāḥ । Cakruḥ buddhim tadā raudrām sarvān naḥ bhakṣayiṣyati ॥ ॥4-57-2॥
Translation
Seeing the vulture, the monkeys who were sitting in Prayopavesha (fasting unto death) formed the terrifying thought: "He will eat us all."

प्रायोपवेश (मृत्यु के लिए उपवास) पर बैठे हुए उन वानरों ने उस गृध्र को देखकर तब यह भयानक विचार किया कि "यह हम सबको खा जाएगा।"
English Commentary
Valmiki captures the irony of the situation. The monkeys were engaged in prayam (fasting unto death), seemingly resigned to die. Yet, the sight of the vulture triggered a panic that he would devour them (bhakshayishyati). This indicates that while they accepted death abstractly as a punishment or escape from shame, the immediate, visceral reality of a violent death by a predator was still terrifying. It underscores the primal instinct to preserve the integrity of the body, even when one has mentally decided to end one's life.

यहाँ स्थिति की विडंबना (irony) है। वानर 'प्रायम् उपविष्टाः' थे, अर्थात वे स्वयं मृत्यु का वरण करने बैठे थे। फिर भी, एक शिकारी (गिद्ध) द्वारा खाए जाने का विचार उनके मन में 'रौद्राम् बुद्धिम्' (भयानक विचार) उत्पन्न कर रहा था। मृत्यु की इच्छा करना एक बात है, और किसी हिंसक जीव का ग्रास बनना दूसरी बात। यह श्लोक जीवन के प्रति मोह को दर्शाता है जो मृत्यु के द्वार पर भी बना रहता है। उन्हें लगा कि संपाती उनकी विवशता का लाभ उठाने आया है।
