Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
श्येनाः चतुर्थम् गच्छन्ति गृध्रा गच्छन्ति पंचमम् ।
बल वीर्य उपपन्नानाम् रूप यौवन शालिनाम् ॥ ॥४-५८-२८॥
Śyenāḥ caturtham gacchanti gṛdhrā gacchanti pañcamam |
Bala vīrya upapannānām rūpa yauvana śālinām ॥4-58-28॥
Translation
Hawks go in the fourth path, and vultures go in the fifth. These (vultures) are endowed with strength and vigor, and possess beauty and youth.
हिंदी अनुवाद
बाज (श्येन) चौथे मार्ग में उड़ते हैं और गिद्ध (गृध्र) पाँचवें मार्ग में जाते हैं। (ये गिद्ध) बल और वीर्य से संपन्न तथा रूप और यौवन से सुशोभित होते हैं।
English Commentary
Entering the domain of raptors. The fourth level is for hawks ('Shyenah'). The fifth belongs to vultures ('Gridhra'). Sampati describes his kin as possessing 'bala' (strength) and 'virya' (valor). Interestingly, he calls them 'rupa yauvana shalinam' (full of beauty and youth). This subjective aesthetic appreciation highlights that in the avian world, the ability to dominate the high skies corresponds to vitality and perfection, challenging the terrestrial view of vultures as mere scavengers.

शिकारी पक्षियों का क्षेत्र। चौथा स्तर बाजों ('श्येन') का है जो तेज उड़ान भरते हैं। पाँचवां स्तर, जो बहुत ऊँचा है, गिद्धों ('गृध्रा') का है। यहाँ गिद्धों के लिए 'रूप यौवन शालिनाम्' (सुंदर और युवा दिखने वाले) विशेषण का प्रयोग कौतूहल जगाता है, क्योंकि गिद्धों को अक्सर कुरूप माना जाता है। लेकिन सम्पाती के लिए, ऊँचाई पर उड़ने की क्षमता ही असली सौंदर्य और यौवन है। यह उनकी जाति का गर्व है कि वे बाज से भी ऊपर उड़ते हैं।
