Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
समुद्रम् नेतुम् इच्छामि भवद्भिः वरुण आलयम् ।
प्रदास्यामि उदकम् भ्रातुः स्वर् गतस्य महात्मनः ॥ ॥४-५८-३५॥
Samudram netum icchāmi bhavadbhiḥ varuṇa ālayam । Pradāsyāmi udakam bhrātuḥ svar gatasya mahātmanaḥ ॥ ॥4-58-35॥
Translation
I wish to be taken by you to the abode of Varuna (the ocean). I shall offer water oblations to my high-souled brother who has gone to heaven.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप लोग मुझे वरुणालय (समुद्र) के तट पर ले चलें। मैं अपने स्वर्गवासी महात्मा भाई (जटायु) को जलांजलि देना चाहता हूँ।
English Commentary
This verse underscores the profound importance of funeral rites (Antyeshti) and water oblations (Tarpan) in Sanatana Dharma. Despite his physical infirmity and winglessness, Sampati’s immediate priority upon confirming Jatayu's death is to perform the requisite spiritual duties. The use of the term Mahātmanaḥ (high-souled) acknowledges Jatayu’s glorious sacrifice for the sake of Dharma. It signifies that Sampati’s grief has sublimated into a ritualistic reverence. By asking the Vanaras for physical assistance to reach the ocean, Sampati bridges the gap between species, establishing a bond of kinship and shared sorrow with Rama’s messengers.

इस श्लोक में सनातन धर्म में अंत्येष्टि और तर्पण के महत्त्व को दर्शाया गया है। यद्यपि संपाति स्वयं पंखहीन और दुर्बल हैं, फिर भी जटायु की मृत्यु का समाचार सुनने के बाद उनका प्रथम कर्तव्य अपने अग्रज के प्रति धार्मिक दायित्वों का निर्वाह करना है। 'महात्मनः' शब्द का प्रयोग जटायु के महान त्याग और राम-काज में उनके बलिदान को सम्मानित करता है। संपाति का शोक अब एक पवित्र अनुष्ठान में बदल रहा है। वानरों से सहायता माँगना यह दर्शाता है कि अब पक्षीराज और वानर सेना के बीच एक पारिवारिक और भावनात्मक संबंध स्थापित हो चुका है।
