तम् अहम् भ्रातरम् दृष्ट्वा सूर्य रश्मिभिः अर्दितम् ।
पक्षाभ्यम् छादयामास स्नेहात् परम विह्वलम् ॥ ॥४-५८-६॥
Tam aham bhrātaram dṛṣṭvā sūrya raśmibhiḥ arditam |
Pakṣābhyam chādayāmāsa snehāt parama vihvalam ॥4-58-6॥
Translation
Seeing my brother tormented by the sun's rays and greatly distressed, out of affection, I covered him with my wings.

सूर्य की किरणों से पीड़ित और अत्यंत व्याकुल अपने उस भाई को देखकर, मैंने स्नेहवश उसे अपने दोनों पंखों से ढक लिया।
English Commentary
This is the climax of Sampati's flashback, illustrating the depth of his character and love. Recognizing Jatayu's distress ('arditam'), Sampati acts instinctively as a protector. The act of shielding Jatayu with his own wings ('pakshabhyam chadayamasa') is an act of supreme sacrifice. He knowingly exposed his own wings to the scorching sun to save his younger brother. The motivation is explicitly stated as 'snehat' (out of affection), emphasizing that his bond with Jatayu was stronger than his instinct for self-preservation.

यह श्लोक भ्रातृ-प्रेम (Brotherly love) का सर्वोच्च उदाहरण है। जब सम्पाती ने देखा कि जटायु सूर्यताप से जल रहा है ('रश्मिभिः अर्दितम्'), तो उसने अपनी सुरक्षा की परवाह किए बिना उसे बचाना चुना। 'पक्षाभ्यम् छादयामास' (पंखों से ढक लिया) एक रक्षात्मक मुद्रा है। यहां 'स्नेहात्' (प्रेम के कारण) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है—उसने यह कार्य किसी कर्तव्य के बोझ से नहीं, अपितु निस्वार्थ प्रेम से किया। उसने अपने पंखों की बलि देकर भाई के प्राण बचाए।
