ततो गृहीत्वा वासः तु शुभानि आभरणानि च ।
अभवत् बाष्प सम्रुद्धः नीहारेण इव चन्द्रमाः ॥ ॥४-६-१६॥
Tato gṛhītvā vāsaḥ tu śubhāni ābharaṇāni ca । Abhavat bāṣpa samruddhaḥ nīhāreṇa iva candramāḥ ॥ ॥4-6-16॥
Translation
Then, holding that garment and the auspicious ornaments, he became filled with tears, just as the moon is obscured by mist.

तब उस वस्त्र और शुभ आभूषणों को हाथ में लेते ही, राम की आँखों में आँसू भर आए, जैसे कोहरे से चंद्रमा ढक जाता है।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses a classic simile here: Rama is the moon (candramah), and his tears are the mist (niharena). Just as mist obscures the brightness of the moon, grief clouds Rama's radiant face. The physical act of holding (grahitva) the items triggers an immediate emotional collapse. The objects act as a sensory link to Sita, breaking the dam of Rama's suppressed sorrow. It creates a vivid image of beauty marred by tragedy.

वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ एक सुंदर उपमा का प्रयोग करते हैं। राम का मुख 'चन्द्रमा' के समान है जो स्वभाव से शीतल और आह्लादक है, लेकिन शोक रूपी 'नीहार' (कोहरा/ओस) ने उसे ढक लिया है। जैसे ही राम ने सीता के स्पर्श किए हुए आभूषणों को छुआ, उनका धैर्य टूट गया। 'बाष्प सम्रुद्धः' का अर्थ है आंसुओं से अवरुद्ध हो जाना। यह स्पर्श स्मृति को जीवित कर देता है। यह श्लोक राम के मानवीय पक्ष को उजागर करता है, जहाँ वे मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम होने के साथ-साथ एक विरही पति भी हैं।
