अनुमानात् तु जानामि मैथिली सा न संशयः ।
ह्रियमाणा मया दृष्टा रक्षसा रौउद्र कर्मणा ॥ ॥४-६-९॥
Anumānāt tu jānāmi maithilī sā na saṃśayaḥ । Hriyamāṇā mayā dṛṣṭā rakṣasā raudra karmaṇā ॥ ॥4-6-9॥
Translation
"I know by inference that it was indeed Maithili; there is no doubt. I saw her being carried away by a Rakshasa of cruel deeds."

"मैं अनुमान से जानता हूँ कि वह मैथिली ही थीं, इसमें कोई संशय नहीं है। मैंने उन्हें एक क्रूर कर्म करने वाले राक्षस द्वारा ले जाते हुए देखा था।"
English Commentary
This is the turning point of the conversation. Sugriva moves from general assurances to specific evidence. He clarifies that he saw a woman being abducted by a fierce Rakshasa. Although he uses the word anumanat (by inference), he pairs it with na sanshayah (no doubt). This means that while he didn't know who she was at the moment of the event, matching that visual memory with Rama's current story confirms her identity beyond doubt. This confirmation provides Rama with the first tangible proof that Sita is alive and was seen in this specific region.

अब तक सुग्रीव सांत्वना दे रहे थे, लेकिन अब वे 'प्रत्यक्षदर्शी' (eyewitness) होने का प्रमाण दे रहे हैं। यद्यपि वे कहते हैं 'अनुमानात' (अनुमान से), परन्तु आगे कहते हैं 'न संशयः' (कोई शक नहीं)। जब उन्होंने आकाश मार्ग से किसी स्त्री को जाते देखा था, तब वे नहीं जानते थे कि वह सीता हैं, किन्तु राम की कहानी सुनकर अब उन्होंने 'अनुमान' लगा लिया है कि वह सीता ही थीं। यह श्लोक कहानी को एक नया मोड़ देता है—सुग्रीव के पास सीता के बारे में ठोस सुराग है।
