किम् ते व्याधि समुत्थानम् पक्षयोः पतनम् कथम् ।
दण्डो वा अयम् धृतः केन सर्वम् आख्याहि पृच्छतः ॥ ॥४-६०-२१॥
Kim te vyādhi samutthānam pakṣayoḥ patanam katham । Daṇḍo vā ayam dhṛtaḥ kena sarvam ākhyāhi pṛcchataḥ ॥ ॥4-60-21॥
Translation
Is this condition caused by a disease? How did your wings fall off? Or is this a punishment inflicted by someone? Tell me everything as I ask.

क्या यह (दशा) किसी रोग से उत्पन्न हुई है? तुम्हारे पंखों का पतन कैसे हुआ? अथवा क्या किसी के द्वारा तुम्हें यह दंड दिया गया है? मेरे पूछने पर यह सब बताओ।
English Commentary
The Sage initiates the inquiry into the cause (nidana) of Sampati's suffering. He hypothesizes three causes: biological (vyadhi - disease), accidental (patanam - fall), or retributive (danda - punishment). The inclusion of "punishment" suggests the Sage suspects a moral transgression or a curse might be involved. This interrogation is crucial; before the Sage can offer a remedy or prophecy, the narrative of the fall must be confessed. It invites Sampati to unburden his conscience, marking the beginning of his spiritual rehabilitation.

एक वैद्य और गुरु की भांति, ऋषि अब कारण जानना चाहते हैं। वे तीन संभावनाएँ रखते हैं: 'व्याधि' (शारीरिक रोग), 'पक्षयोः पतनम्' (स्वाभाविक दुर्घटना), या 'दण्डो' (किसी पाप या अपराध का फल)। कर्मफल के सिद्धांत में विश्वास रखने वाले ऋषि यह जानते हैं कि इतनी बड़ी विपत्ति अकारण नहीं आती। 'सर्वम् आख्याहि' (सब कुछ कहो) का आदेश देकर वे संपाती को अपना मन हल्का करने (catharsis) का अवसर दे रहे हैं। सत्य स्वीकारना ही प्रायश्चित का पहला चरण है।
