अष्टौ वर्ष सहस्राणि तेन अस्मिन् ऋषिणा गिरौ ।
वसतो मम धर्मज्ञो स्वर् गते तु निशाकरे ॥ ॥४-६०-९॥
Aṣṭau varṣa sahasrāṇi tena asmin ṛṣiṇā girau । Vasato mama dharmajño svar gate tu niśākare ॥ ॥4-60-9॥
Translation
O knowers of dharma! Eight thousand years have passed for me living on this mountain since the Sage Nishakara ascended to heaven.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे धर्मज्ञों! उस ऋषि निशाकर के स्वर्गवासी हो जाने के पश्चात, इस पर्वत पर रहते हुए मुझे आठ हजार वर्ष बीत चुके हैं।
English Commentary
This verse acts as a temporal marker within the narrative. Sampati briefly breaks the "flashback" of his fall to inform the Vanaras of the vast duration of his subsequent suffering—eight thousand years. This immense timeframe highlights the longevity of semi-divine beings like Sampati and emphasizes the depth of his penance and patience. By addressing the Vanaras as dharmajnah (knowers of righteousness), he appeals to their sense of duty and empathy. It clarifies that while he is about to describe his meeting with the Sage, the Sage has long since departed from this mortal plane, leaving Sampati alone for millennia.
