Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पक्षभ्याम् च मया गुप्तो जटायुः न प्रदह्यत ।
प्रमादात् तत्र निर्दग्धः पतन् वायु पथात् अहम् ॥ ॥४-६१-१५॥
Pakṣabhyām ca mayā gupto jaṭāyuḥ na pradahyata । Pramādāt tatra nirdagdhaḥ patan vāyu pathāt aham ॥ ॥4-61-15॥
Translation
Protected by my wings, Jatayu was not burnt. But falling from the path of the wind, I was severely burnt there due to my carelessness (rashness/focus on saving him).
हिंदी अनुवाद
मेरे पंखों द्वारा छिपा लिए जाने (ढक लेने) के कारण जटायु नहीं जला। किन्तु (इस प्रक्रिया में) वायु मार्ग से गिरते हुए, असावधानी (प्रमाद) के कारण मैं वहां बुरी तरह जल गया।
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the ultimate sacrifice. Sampati shielded Jatayu with his own wings (pakshabhyam guptah), acting as a heat shield against the solar radiation. While Jatayu remained unscathed, Sampati bore the full brunt of the fire. The use of pramadat (carelessness/error) is poignant; Sampati frames his sacrifice as a tactical error of his own safety, accepting full responsibility for his burnt state. He saved his brother at the cost of his own wings—his identity and power.

यह रामायण के सबसे मार्मिक त्यागों में से एक है। संपाती ने अपने विशाल पंखों को फैलाकर जटायु को सूर्य के ताप से ढक लिया ('गुप्तो')। परिणाम यह हुआ कि जटayu बच गए ('न प्रदह्यत'), लेकिन संपाती के पंख जल गए। 'प्रमादात्' (प्रमाद/लापरवाही से) यहाँ एक विनम्र स्वीकारोक्ति है—वे भाई को बचाने में इतने मग्न थे कि उन्होंने अपनी सुरक्षा का ध्यान नहीं रखा। संपाती का यह त्याग ही बाद में रामकाज (सीता की खोज) का आधार बना, क्योंकि जटायु जीवित रहे और रावण का मार्ग बता सके, और संपाती यहाँ रहकर वानरों को सूचना दे सके।
