अहम् चैव जटायुः च संघर्षात् दर्प मोहितौ ।
आकाशम् पतितौ दूरात् जिज्ञासन्तौ पराक्रमम् ॥ ॥४-६१-३॥
Aham caiva jaṭāyuḥ ca saṃgharṣāt darpa mohitau । Ākāśam patitau dūrāt jijñāsantau parākramam ॥ ॥4-61-3॥
Translation
Jatayu and I, deluded by arrogance due to rivalry, flew far into the sky, wishing to test our prowess.

मैं और जटayu, होड़ (प्रतिस्पर्धा) के कारण अहंकार से मोहित होकर, अपने पराक्रम की परीक्षा लेने हेतु दूर आकाश में उड़े।
English Commentary
Sampati identifies the root sins of his action: samgharsha (friction/competition) and darpa (pride/arrogance). The desire to outdo his brother blinded him (mohitau - deluded). They sought to test their limits (jijnasantau parakramam), not for a higher cause, but for ego. This verse serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked sibling rivalry and the intoxication of power. It sets the context that their flight was not a journey of devotion or duty, but a voyage of vanity.

संपाती विपत्ति के मूल कारण का खुलासा करते हैं: 'संघर्ष' (प्रतिस्पर्धा/rivalry) और 'दर्प' (घमंड)। भाईयों के बीच शक्ति प्रदर्शन की होड़ ने उनकी विवेक-बुद्धि को हर लिया था ('मोहितौ')। 'जिज्ञासन्तौ पराक्रमम्' (पराक्रम जानने की इच्छा) वीरों का स्वभाव है, लेकिन जब यह मर्यादा लांघ जाए तो विनाशकारी हो जाता है। यह श्लोक यह शिक्षा देता है कि शक्ति का मद और अपनों से ही प्रतिस्पर्धा पतन का कारण बनती है। उन्होंने आकाश को चुनौती दी, जो उनकी सीमा से परे था।
