Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कैलास शिखरे बद्ध्वा मुनीनाम् अग्रतः पणम् ।
रविः स्यात् अनुयातव्यो यावत् अस्तम् महागिरिम् ॥ ॥४-६१-४॥
Kailāsa śikhare baddhvā munīnām agrataḥ paṇam । Raviḥ syāt anuyātavyo yāvat astam mahāgirim ॥ ॥4-61-4॥
Translation
Having made a wager on the peak of Kailash in front of the sages, (we vowed): "The sun is to be followed until it reaches the great mountain of sunset (Astachala)."

हम दोनों कैलास पर्वत के शिखर पर मुनियों के समक्ष यह प्रतिज्ञा (शर्त) की थी कि 'हमें सूर्य का तब तक पीछा करना है जब तक वह अस्ताचल (महागिरी) तक न पहुँच जाए।'
English Commentary
The specific terms of the challenge are laid out here. The location, Mount Kailash, adds a sacred yet high-altitude starting point. The wager (panam) was formalized in front of witnesses (the Munis), adding social pressure to the physical challenge. The goal was endurance and speed: to shadow the sun across the entire sky until it set behind the mythical Mahagiri (likely Astachala, the mountain of sunset). This was a challenge to the cosmic order—trying to match the pace of the Sun God himself.
