न मे दशरथ स्नेहात् पुत्रेण उत्पादितम् प्रियम् ।
तस्य तु एवम् ब्रुवाणस्य संहतैः वानरैः सह ॥४-६३-८॥
na me daśaratha snehāt putreṇa utpāditam priyam । tasya tu evam bruvāṇasya saṃhataiḥ vānaraiḥ saha ॥4-63-8॥
Translation
"My son did not do what would have pleased me, (even) out of consideration for my friendship with Dasharatha." While he was speaking thus with the assembled Vanaras...

"मेरे पुत्र ने दशरथ के साथ मेरे स्नेह (मित्रता) के कारण भी मेरा प्रिय (इच्छित कार्य) नहीं किया।" (सम्पाती वानरों से ऐसा कह ही रहे थे...) जब वह वानरों के समूह के साथ इस प्रकार बात कर रहे थे...
English Commentary
Sampati expresses a personal sense of betrayal by his son's inaction. He cites Dasharatha snehāt (friendship with Dasharatha) as a compelling reason why his son should have acted. Helping the daughter-in-law of a father's friend is a familial duty. By failing to save Sita, the son failed to honor his father's alliances. The second half of the verse shifts the narrative mode. Tasya tu evam bruvāṇasya (While he was speaking thus) signals an interruption by a divine phenomenon. It sets the scene where the Vanaras are gathered (saṃhataiḥ) around him, listening to his regret, right before the physical manifestation of the sage's prophecy occurs.

सम्पाती की नाराजगी का दूसरा कारण उनकी दशरथ से मित्रता थी। वे कहते हैं कि यदि मानवता के नाते नहीं, तो कम से कम मेरे मित्र की पुत्रवधू होने के नाते सुपार्श्व को सीता को बचाना चाहिए था। 'दशरथ स्नेहात्'—यह वाक्यांश सिद्ध करता है कि पक्षीराज और अयोध्या नरेश के बीच पुराने संबंध थे। श्लोक का दूसरा भाग एक घटनाक्रम का मोड़ है। 'तस्य तु एवम् ब्रुवाणस्य'—जब वह ऐसी बातें कर रहे थे, तभी एक चमत्कार होने वाला था। यह कथा में 'सस्पेंस' (कौतूहल) उत्पन्न करता है। वानर ध्यानपूर्वक उनकी बात सुन रहे थे कि तभी कुछ अद्भुत हुआ।
