Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
संकुलम् दानव इन्द्रैः च पाताल तल वासिभिः ।
रोम हर्ष करम् दृष्ट्वा विषेदुः कपिकुंजराः ॥४-६४-६॥
saṃkulam dānava indraiḥ ca pātāla tala vāsibhiḥ । roma harṣa karam dṛṣṭvā viṣeduḥ kapikuṃjarāḥ ॥4-64-6॥
Translation
It was crowded with lords of Danavas and inhabitants of the netherworld. Seeing that hair-raising sight, the elephant-like monkeys became despondent.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह (सागर) दानवराजों और पाताल में रहने वाले जीवों से भरा हुआ था। उस रोंगटे खड़े कर देने वाले (भयानक) दृश्य को देखकर कपिकुंजर (श्रेष्ठ वानर) विषाद (दुःख) से भर गए।
English Commentary
The terror of the deep is revealed. The ocean is populated by dānava indraiḥ (lords of demons) and creatures of the underworld (pātāla). It is not just a physical barrier but a hostile territory. The sight is roma harṣa karam (causing horripilation/goosebumps). Consequently, the kapikuṃjarāḥ (elephant-like monkeys) sink into viṣeduḥ (despair/sadness). The realization hits them: finding the location was only half the battle; reaching it requires crossing a monster-infested abyss.

सागर केवल जल नहीं, अपितु राक्षसों और दानवों का घर है। 'पाताल तल वासिभिः'—समुद्र की गहराई पाताल तक जाती है जहाँ खतरनाक जीव रहते हैं। 'रोम हर्ष करम्'—ऐसा दृश्य जिसे देखकर रोंगटे खड़े हो जाएं। अभी कुछ देर पहले जो वानर उत्साह से भरे थे, वास्तविकता (Reality Check) सामने आते ही 'विषेदुः' (दुखी/हताश हो गए)। उत्साह और हताशा का यह उतार-चढ़ाव रामायण में वानरों के मनोविज्ञान का यथार्थवादी चित्रण है।
