आकाशम् इव दुष्पारम् सागरम् प्रेक्ष्य वानराः ।
विषेदुः सहिता सर्वे कथम् कार्यम् इति ब्रुवन् ॥४-६४-७॥
ākāśam iva duṣpāram sāgaram prekṣya vānarāḥ । viṣeduḥ sahitā sarve katham kāryam iti bruvan ॥4-64-7॥
Translation
Seeing the ocean, which was impassable like the sky, all the monkeys together became despondent, asking, "How is this task to be done?"

आकाश के समान दुस्तर (जिसे पार करना कठिन हो) सागर को देखकर, सभी वानर एक साथ विषादग्रस्त हो गए और बोलने लगे—"यह कार्य कैसे होगा?"
English Commentary
The comparison ākāśam iva duṣpāram (difficult to cross like the sky) emphasizes the boundlessness of the obstacle. Just as one cannot walk on the sky, the monkeys feel they cannot tread this water. The collective query katham kāryam ("How is it to be done?") marks the shift from the "What" (Find Sita) to the "How" (Logistics). The complexity of the mission has escalated from search to inter-continental crossing, leading to renewed hopelessness among the rank and file.

सागर की तुलना आकाश से की गई है—'आकाशम् इव दुष्पारम्'। जैसे आकाश का कोई अंत नहीं और उस पर चलना असंभव है, वैसा ही यह सागर है। 'कथम् कार्यम्'—यह यक्ष प्रश्न है। रणनीति (Strategy) का अभाव हताशा को जन्म देता है। वानर आपस में पूछने लगे कि बिना नाव या पुल के इसे कैसे पार करेंगे? सम्पाती उड़ सकता था, लेकिन वानर (हनुमान जी को छोड़कर अभी किसी को अपनी शक्ति का भान नहीं है) भूमिचर हैं। यह सामूहिक अवसाद (Collective Depression) का क्षण है।
