Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सा तु तत्र एव संभ्रांता सुवृत्ता वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ।
एक पत्नी व्रतम् इदम् को नाशयितुम् इच्छति ॥४-६६-१६॥
sā tu tatra eva saṃbhrāntā suvṛttā vākyam abravīt |
eka patnī vratam idam ko nāśayitum icchati ॥4-66-16॥
Translation
Alarmed right there, that woman of virtuous conduct spoke these words: "Who wishes to destroy this vow of fidelity to a single husband?"

(अदृश्य स्पर्श से) घबराई हुई वह सदाचारिणी (अंजना) वहीं बोली—"मेरे पातिव्रत्य धर्म (एक-पत्नी-व्रत) को कौन नष्ट करना चाहता है?"
English Commentary
Anjana's reaction underscores her virtuous character. Alarmed ('sambhranta') by the invisible touch, her primary concern is ethical, not just physical. As the wife of Kesari, she adheres to 'eka patni vratam' (the vow of fidelity to one husband). Her interrogation—"Who wishes to destroy this vow?"—proves her chastity and lack of consent to any illicit act. It highlights the moral dilemma she faces and establishes her integrity before the audience.
