तदा शैलाग्र शिखरे वामो हनुर् अभज्यत ।
ततो हि नाम धेयम् ते हनुमान् इति कीर्तितम् ॥ ॥४-६६-२४॥
Tadā śailāgra śikhare vāmo hanur abhajyata |
Tato hi nāma dheyam te hanūmān iti kīrtitam ॥4-66-24॥
Translation
At that time, falling onto the mountain peak, your left jaw (Hanu) was fractured. Because of this, your name became celebrated as 'Hanuman' (The one with the prominent jaw).

उस समय पर्वत के शिखर पर गिरने से आपकी बाईं ठुड्डी (हनु) टूट गई थी। इसी कारण से आपका नाम 'हनुमान' प्रसिद्ध हुआ।
English Commentary
Here, Jambavan explains the etymology of the name 'Hanuman.' When struck by Indra's Vajra, the child fell onto a mountain peak, damaging his left jaw (Hanu). Thus, he became known as Hanuman—'the one with the prominent or broken jaw.' This physical mark was not a scar of defeat, but a badge of honor, signifying that he survived the most powerful weapon in the universe while still an infant. By explaining the origin of his name, Jambavan connects Hanuman's identity directly to his resilience and divine history, reinforcing the idea that he is a survivor destined for greatness.

यहाँ जामवंत जी हनुमान जी के नाम की व्युत्पत्ति (origin) बता रहे हैं। वज्र के प्रहार से बालक मारुति पर्वत शिखर पर गिरे और उनकी 'हनु' यानी ठुड्डी पर चोट लगी, जिससे वह थोड़ी टेढ़ी हो गई। संस्कृत में 'हनु' का अर्थ जबड़ा या ठुड्डी है और 'मान' का अर्थ है उसे धारण करने वाला या उससे युक्त। यह शारीरिक चिन्ह उनकी कमजोरी नहीं, बल्कि उनके अदम्य साहस और इंद्र के वज्र को सह लेने की क्षमता का प्रतीक बन गया। यह नाम तीनों लोकों में उनकी उस अद्भुत बाल-लीला की याद दिलाता है। जामवंत जी उन्हें उनके नाम का इतिहास बताकर उनके आत्म-गौरव को जगा रहे हैं।
