Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
निःश्वसद्भिः तदा तैः तु भुजगैः अर्ध निःसृतैः ।
स पताक इव आभाति स तदा धरणी धरः ॥ ॥४-६७-४७॥
Niḥśvasadbhiḥ tadā taiḥ tu bhujagaiḥ ardha niḥsṛtaiḥ |
Sa patāka iva ābhāti sa tadā dharaṇī dharaḥ ॥4-67-47॥
Translation
With those hissing serpents half-emerged from their holes, the mountain at that time appeared as if it were adorned with fluttering flags.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय (बिलों से) आधे निकले हुए और फुफकारते हुए उन सर्पों के कारण वह पर्वत (धरणीधर) ऐसा सुशोभित हो रहा था, मानो उस पर अनेक पताकाएं (झंडे) फहरा रही हों।
English Commentary
Valmiki finds artistic grandeur even in chaos. The snakes, half-emerged from their burrows, hissing with spread hoods due to pressure, resemble fluttering flags (pataka). This simile implies that even nature's distress signals serve to decorate the hero's departure. Just as flags wave during a royal march, these serpents inadvertently act as banners for Hanuman’s expedition. It transforms a scene of geological trauma into a majestic ceremonial start, suggesting that the very earth is raising banners to salute the hero's impossible undertaking.
हिंदी टीका
वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ भय के दृश्य में भी सौंदर्य खोज लेते हैं। पर्वत के बिलों से आधे बाहर निकले हुए नाग जब क्रोध और भय में अपने फन फैलाकर फुफकार रहे हैं, तो वे लहराते हुए झंडों (पताका) जैसे लग रहे हैं। यह 'उपमा अलंकार' अद्भुत है। जिस प्रकार सेना के कूच करते समय झंडे लहराते हैं, वैसे ही हनुमान जी के अभियान के आरम्भ में ये नाग अनजाने में ही ध्वज का काम कर रहे हैं। यह दृश्य भयानक होते हुए भी भव्य है, जो हनुमान जी के प्रस्थान को एक राजसी और विजयोल्लास का रूप दे रहा है।
