एवम् उक्तः तु सुग्रीवः रामेण आर्तेन वानरः ।
अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिः वाक्यम् सबाष्पम् बाष्प गद्गदः ॥ ॥४-७-१॥
Evam uktaḥ tu sugrīvaḥ rāmeṇa ārtena vānaraḥ । Abravīt prāñjaliḥ vākyam sabāṣpam bāṣpa gadgadaḥ ॥ ॥4-7-1॥
Translation
Thus addressed by the distressed Rama, the Vanara Sugriva spoke with folded hands, filled with tears, his voice choked with emotion.

पीड़ित राम के द्वारा ऐसा कहे जाने पर, वानर सुग्रीव ने हाथ जोड़कर, आँखों में आँसू लिए और रुंधे हुए गले से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse sets a compassionate tone for Sugriva's response. Seeing Rama artena (distressed), Sugriva mirrors his emotion, becoming sabashpam (tearful) and gadgadah (choked up). The gesture of pranjalih (folded hands) indicates profound respect and perhaps an apologetic stance for the lack of immediate information he is about to reveal. It confirms that Sugriva deeply empathizes with Rama's pain, solidifying their bond as true friends.

यहाँ सुग्रीव की संवेदनशीलता का परिचय मिलता है। राम का कष्ट देखकर सुग्रीव भी रो पड़ते हैं ('सबाष्पम्' - आंसुओं सहित)। वे 'प्राञ्जलिः' (हाथ जोड़कर) खड़े हैं, जो सम्मान और विनय का प्रतीक है। सुग्रीव की आवाज़ 'बाष्प गद्गदः' (आंसुओं के कारण रुंधी हुई) है। यह दर्शाता है कि यह मित्रता राजनीतिक नहीं, बल्कि भावनात्मक है। सुग्रीव अब जो कहने जा रहे हैं (कि उन्हें रावण का पता नहीं मालूम), उसके लिए वे पहले से ही विनयशील मुद्रा अपना रहे हैं।
