न जाने निलयम् तस्य सर्वथा पाप रक्षसः ।
सामर्थ्यम् विक्रमम् वा अपि दौष्कुलेयस्य वा कुलम् ॥ ॥४-७-२॥
Na jāne nilayam tasya sarvathā pāpa rakṣasaḥ । Sāmarthyam vikramam vā api dauṣkuleyasya vā kulam ॥ ॥4-7-2॥
Translation
"I do not know the abode of that sinful Rakshasa at all. Nor do I know the capability, prowess, or lineage of that one born of a wicked family."

"मैं उस पापी राक्षस का निवास स्थान (निलय) बिल्कुल नहीं जानता। उस दुष्ट कुल वाले (दौष्कुलेय) के सामर्थ्य, पराक्रम या वंश के बारे में भी मुझे ज्ञान नहीं है।"
English Commentary
Sugriva delivers an honest but disappointing admission: Na jane (I do not know). Despite seeing the abduction, he has no idea where Ravana lives (nilayam), nor his power (samarthyam). This honesty is crucial for strategic planning. Calling Ravana daushkuleya (of evil lineage) shows Sugriva stands with Rama morally, even if he currently lacks the tactical intelligence. This creates a narrative tension: the hero is ready to fight, but the target is unknown.

यह एक बड़ा 'एंटी-क्लाइमेक्स' (anticlimax) है। राम ने अभी रावण को मारने की प्रतिज्ञा की थी, लेकिन सुग्रीव स्वीकार करते हैं कि उन्हें रावण का पता ('निलयम्') ही नहीं मालूम। सुग्रीव यहाँ बहुत ईमानदार हैं। वे झूठ बोलकर राम को दिलासा नहीं देना चाहते। वे रावण को 'दौष्कुलेय' (बुरे कुल वाला) कहते हैं, जो शत्रु के प्रति उनकी घृणा को दर्शाता है। यह अनभिज्ञता ही आगे चलकर हनुमान आदि को चारो दिशाओं में भेजने का कारण बनती है।
