हितम् वयस्य भावेन ब्रूमि न उपदिशामि ते ।
वयस्यताम् पूजयन् मे न त्वम् शोचितुम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥४-७-१४॥
Hitam vayasya bhāvena brūmi na upadishāmi te |
Vayasyatām pūjayan me na tvam shochitum arhasi ॥4-7-14॥
Translation
I speak for your benefit in the spirit of friendship; I am not instructing you. Honoring my friendship, you ought not to grieve.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं मित्र भाव से आपके हित की बात कह रहा हूँ, आपको उपदेश नहीं दे रहा हूँ। मेरी मित्रता का मान रखते हुए, आपको शोक नहीं करना चाहिए।
English Commentary
Sugriva displays remarkable social intelligence here. Recognizing Rama's superiority in wisdom and stature, he clarifies that his words are not an instruction (upadesha) but a suggestion born of friendship (vayasya bhava). He frames the advice as a request to honor their new bond. By saying 'Honoring my friendship,' he puts the onus on Rama: to continue grieving would be to disregard Sugriva's heartfelt care. It shifts the dynamic from a teacher-student interaction to a peer-to-peer connection based on mutual respect and love.
