अनृतम् न उक्त पूर्वम् मे न च वक्ष्ये कदाचन ।
एतत् ते प्रतिजानामि सत्येन एव शपामि अहम् ॥ ॥४-७-२२॥
Anṛtam na ukta pūrvam me na ca vakṣye kadācana |
Etat te pratijānāmi satyena eva śapāmi aham ॥4-7-22॥
Translation
I have never spoken a falsehood before, nor will I ever speak one in the future. I promise this to you, swearing by truth itself.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैंने पहले कभी झूठ नहीं बोला है और न ही कभी भविष्य में बोलूँगा। मैं तुमसे यह प्रतिज्ञा करता हूँ और सत्य की ही शपथ लेता हूँ।
English Commentary
Here, Rama establishes the bedrock of his character: absolute adherence to truth (Satya). Sugriva, traumatized by his brother Vali's power, needed more than just kind words; he needed a guarantee. Rama’s declaration that he has never lied and never will is significant because it transforms a political alliance into a divine covenant. By swearing on 'Truth' itself, Rama indicates that his power is derived from his integrity. For a leader or a friend, consistency in speech and action is the highest form of reliability. This assurance provides the psychological safety Sugriva desperately needs to trust Rama with his life.

भगवान राम यहाँ अपने चरित्र की सबसे बड़ी विशेषता—सत्यवादिता—को उजागर करते हैं। सुग्रीव के मन में बालि के बल को लेकर भय था, इसलिए उसे विश्वास दिलाने के लिए राम ने न केवल आश्वासन दिया, बल्कि सत्य की शपथ ली। यह श्लोक 'रघुकुल रीति सदा चलि आई, प्राण जाई पर वचन न जाई' का प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण है। राम का यह कथन केवल एक मित्र को सांत्वना देना नहीं, बल्कि यह स्थापित करना है कि उनका पूरा जीवन सत्य पर आधारित है। जब एक महाशक्तिशाली व्यक्ति अपनी सत्यता की शपथ लेता है, तो आश्रित व्यक्ति (सुग्रीव) का भय तुरंत समाप्त हो जाता है।
