Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न अहम् ताम् अनुशोचामि प्राकृतो वानरो अपि सन् ।
महात्मा च विनीतः च किम् पुनर् धृतिमान् महान् ॥ ॥४-७-७॥
Na aham tām anuśocāmi prākṛto vānaro api san । Mahātmā ca vinītaḥ ca kim punar dhṛtimān mahān ॥ ॥4-7-7॥
Translation
"Even being a common Vanara, I do not grieve for her (excessively). How much more should a great soul like you, disciplined and firm, maintain composure?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"एक साधारण (प्राकृत) वानर होते हुए भी मैं उसके लिए (इतना) शोक नहीं करता। फिर आप तो महात्मा, विनीत और धैर्यवान हैं; आपको तो और भी धैर्य रखना चाहिए।"
English Commentary
Sugriva reinforces the contrast between his humble nature and Rama's divinity. He refers to himself as a prakrito vanaro (common/instinctive monkey) and Rama as a Mahatma (Great Soul). The logic is an a fortiori argument: if a creature of lower birth can control his grief, how much more is expected of a refined, self-controlled prince? This is meant to shame Rama gently into regaining his composure.

सुग्रीव अपनी तुलना राम से 'न्यूनता' में करते हैं। वे स्वयं को 'प्राकृतो वानरो' (साधारण/गंवार बंदर) कहते हैं और राम को 'महात्मा' और 'विनीतः' (संस्कारी)। तर्क यह है कि यदि पशु-योनि वाला जीव भावनाओं पर नियंत्रण रख सकता है, तो मानव-श्रेष्ठ राम को तो यह और आसानी से करना चाहिए। यह राम के 'अहं' (self-respect) को जगाने का प्रयास है।
