सर्वथा अहम् अनुग्राह्यो देवतानाम् न संशयः ।
उपपन्नः गुण उपेतः सखा यस्य भवान् मम ॥ ॥४-८-२॥
Sarvathā aham anugrāhyo devatānām na saṃśayaḥ |
Upapannaḥ guṇa upetaḥ sakhā yasya bhavān mama ॥4-8-2॥
Translation
I am undoubtedly worthy of the gods' grace in every way, for I have you—endowed with such virtues—as my friend.

इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि मैं देवताओं का सर्वथा कृपापात्र हूँ, जो मुझे आप जैसा गुणवान और संपन्न मित्र प्राप्त हुआ है।
English Commentary
Sugriva attributes this alliance not to his own diplomatic skill, but to divine grace (Devatunam Anugrahyo). He recognizes that finding a friend of Rama's caliber—replete with virtues (Guna Upetah)—is a rare blessing. This reflects a worldview where high-value connections are seen as gifts from the cosmos rather than earned achievements. By framing the friendship this way, Sugriva elevates Rama while humbling himself, cementing a relationship based on reverence and mutual respect rather than mere transactional utility.

सुग्रीव यहाँ अपनी मित्रता को 'दैवीय कृपा' मानते हैं। भारतीय संस्कृति में सत्संग या अच्छे मित्र की प्राप्ति को संयोग नहीं, बल्कि प्रारब्ध और ईश्वर की दया माना जाता है। सुग्रीव स्वयं को भाग्यशाली मान रहे हैं कि राम जैसा 'गुण उपेतः' (गुणों से युक्त) व्यक्ति उनका सखा बना। यह विनम्रता का प्रदर्शन है। सुग्रीव यह नहीं कह रहे कि वे राम के मित्र बनने योग्य हैं, बल्कि यह कह रहे हैं कि देवताओं की कृपा से उन्हें यह सौभाग्य मिला है। यह श्लोक कृतज्ञता (Gratitude) का सुंदर उदाहरण है।
