Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्तः तु तेजस्वी धर्मज्ञो धर्म वत्सलः ।
प्रत्युवाच स काकुत्स्थः सुग्रीवम् प्रहसन् इव ॥ ॥४-८-२०॥
Evam uktaḥ tu tejasvī dharmajño dharma vatsalaḥ |
Pratyuvāca sa kākutsthaḥ Sugrīvam prahasan iva ॥4-8-20॥
Translation
Addressed thus, the radiant one, the knower of Dharma, the lover of Dharma, that scion of Kakutstha (Rama), replied to Sugriva, smiling as it were.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सुग्रीव के ऐसा कहने पर, तेजस्वी, धर्म के ज्ञाता और धर्म से प्रेम करने वाले काकुत्स्थ (राम) ने मानो हँसते हुए सुग्रीव को उत्तर दिया।
English Commentary
The contrast in demeanor is striking. While Sugriva is trembling, Rama is Prahasan iva (smiling, as it were). This smile is the smile of capability—it tells Sugriva, "Is this all that troubles you? Consider it solved." Rama is described as Dharmajno (knower of Dharma) and Dharma vatsala (lover of Dharma). His motivation to help Sugriva isn't just friendship, but the moral imperative to protect the oppressed. The radiant (Tejasvi) Rama prepares to speak words that will change Sugriva's destiny.
