उपकार फलम् मित्रम् अपकारो अरि लक्षणम् ।
अद्य एव तम् वधिष्यामि तव भार्या अपहारिणम् ॥ ॥४-८-२१॥
Upakāra phalam mitram apakāro ari lakṣaṇam । Adya eva tam vadhiṣyāmi tava bhāryā apahāriṇam ॥ ॥4-8-21॥
Translation
Benefit (help) is the hallmark of a friend, and injury is the sign of an enemy. I shall kill him (Vali), the abductor of your wife, this very day.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उपकार (सहायता) ही मित्र का फल (लक्षण) है और अपकार (हानि पहुँचाना) शत्रु का लक्षण है। तुम्हारी पत्नी का अपहरण करने वाले उस (वाली) का मैं आज ही वध करूँगा।
English Commentary
Here, Rama provides a pragmatic definition of relationships: friendship is defined by the aid one renders, while enmity is defined by the harm inflicted. Recognizing Sugriva's lingering hesitation and trauma, Rama makes a definitive vow to eliminate the threat 'this very day.' This asserts Rama's role not just as a passive listener, but as an active protector. By identifying Sugriva's enemy as His own, Rama solidifies the alliance, moving it from a verbal agreement to a binding pact of mutual protection.

यहाँ श्रीराम मित्रता और शत्रुता की स्पष्ट परिभाषा देते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि मित्रता केवल बातों तक सीमित नहीं होती, उसका प्रमाण 'उपकार' या सहायता में निहित है। सुग्रीव अभी भी भयभीत थे, इसलिए राम उन्हें आश्वस्त करते हैं कि वे केवल आश्वासन नहीं दे रहे, बल्कि 'आज ही' परिणाम देंगे। श्रीराम यहाँ 'सत्यसंकल्प' के रूप में प्रकट होते हैं। वे सुग्रीव के शत्रु को अपना शत्रु घोषित कर यह सिद्ध करते हैं कि विपत्ति में साथ देना ही सच्ची मित्रता है।
