त्वम् हि पाणि प्रदानेन वयस्यो मे अग्नि साक्षिकम् ।
कृतः प्राणैः बहुमतः सत्येन च शपामि अहम् ॥ ॥४-८-२७॥
Tvam hi pāṇi pradānena vayasya me agni sākṣikam । Kṛtaḥ prāṇaiḥ bahumataḥ satyena ca śapāmi aham ॥ ॥4-8-27॥
Translation
By giving your hand with the fire as a witness, You have become my friend. You are valued by me more than my life; I swear this by truth.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अग्नि को साक्षी मानकर हाथ मिलाने (पाणि-ग्रहण) से आप मेरे मित्र बने हैं। आप मुझे प्राणों से भी बढ़कर प्रिय हैं, मैं सत्य की शपथ लेता हूँ।
English Commentary
Sugriva reiterates the sanctity of their pact, referencing the ritualistic handshake performed before the sacred fire. This is crucial because, in Vedic culture, oaths taken before Agni (Fire) are unbreakable. Sugriva elevates the relationship above mere survival or political gain, stating that Rama is now dearer to him than life itself. This total emotional investment sets the stage for the unwavering loyalty the Vanaras will later show in the search for Sita.

सुग्रीव यहाँ उस अग्नि-साक्षी मैत्री की पवित्रता को दोहराते हैं जो उन्होंने हनुमान जी द्वारा प्रज्वलित अग्नि के समक्ष की थी। वे राम को आश्वस्त करते हैं कि यह मित्रता उनके लिए प्राणों से भी अधिक मूल्यवान है। राजनीति में संधियाँ स्वार्थ के लिए होती हैं, लेकिन राम और सुग्रीव की यह संधि प्रेम और समर्पण में बदल गई है। 'सत्य की शपथ' सुग्रीव की निष्ठा का प्रमाण है।
