बाष्प वेगम् तु सहसा नदी वेगम् इव आगतम् ।
धारयामास धैर्येण सुग्रीवः राम संनिधौ ॥ ॥४-८-३०॥
Bāṣpa vegam tu sahasā nadī vegam iva āgatam । Dhārayāmāsa dhairyeṇa sugrīvaḥ rāma saṃnidhau ॥ ॥4-8-30॥
Translation
However, Sugriva, with patience, held back that sudden rush of tears—which came like the force of a river—in the presence of Rama.
हिंदी अनुवाद
नदी के वेग के समान अचानक आए हुए आंसुओं के उस वेग को सुग्रीव ने राम के समीप धैर्यपूर्वक रोका।
English Commentary
The simile of the 'river's current' illustrates the overwhelming nature of Sugriva's grief. Yet, the verse highlights Sugriva's dignity and willpower (dhairyeṇa). Even in his moment of breakdown, he exercises restraint out of respect for Rama’s presence (rāma saṃnidhau). He struggles to compose himself, wanting to present his case clearly rather than just being consumed by weeping, showing his respect for the decorum of the dialogue.

यद्यपि सुग्रीव अत्यंत दुखी थे, फिर भी उन्होंने मर्यादा का पालन किया। 'नदी वेगम् इव' (नदी के वेग की तरह) आंसुओं को रोकना उनकी मानसिक शक्ति का परिचायक है। वे श्रीराम के सामने अपनी कमजोरी का बहुत अधिक प्रदर्शन नहीं करना चाहते थे, इसलिए उन्होंने पुनः धैर्य धारण किया। यह श्लोक सुग्रीव के चरित्र की गरिमा को बनाए रखता है—वे भावुक हैं, पर कायर नहीं।
