श्रुत्वा एतत् च वचः रामः सुग्रीवम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ।
किम् निमित्तम् अभूत् वैरम् श्रोतुम् इच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥ ॥४-८-४१॥
Śrutvā etat ca vacaḥ rāmaḥ sugrīvam idam abravīt । Kim nimittam abhūt vairam śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ ॥ ॥4-8-41॥
Translation
Hearing these words, Rama spoke to Sugriva: "I wish to hear in truth/detail: what was the cause of this hostility?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
यह वचन सुनकर राम ने सुग्रीव से कहा—मैं यथार्थ रूप से (तत्वतः) सुनना चाहता हूँ कि इस वैर का मुख्य कारण क्या था?
English Commentary
Rama responds not with blind aggression, but with judicial inquiry. He asks for the nimittam (cause) and tattvataḥ (the reality/truth) of the conflict. This is crucial for Rama as the upholder of Dharma. Before he intervenes in a conflict between brothers, he must understand the genesis of the feud to ensure his actions are morally just. He acts as an impartial arbiter before becoming an executioner.

श्रीराम भावुक होकर तुरंत बाण नहीं उठाते, बल्कि एक न्यायाधीश और धर्म-रक्षक की भांति 'वैर का कारण' जानना चाहते हैं। बिना 'निमित्त' (कारण) जाने किसी को दंड देना धर्म नहीं है। राम यह सुनिश्चित करना चाहते हैं कि सुग्रीव का पक्ष न्यायसंगत है या नहीं। यह राम के विवेक और न्यायप्रियता को दर्शाता है।
