आढ्यो वा अपि दरिद्रो वा दुःखितः सुखितोऽपि वा ।
निर्दोषः च सदोषः च वयस्यः परमा गतिः ॥ ॥४-८-८॥
Āḍhyo vā api daridro vā duḥkhitaḥ sukhito'pi vā |
Nirdoṣaḥ ca sadoṣaḥ ca vayasyaḥ paramā gatiḥ ॥4-8-8॥
Translation
Whether rich or poor, happy or sorrowful, innocent or guilty—a friend is the ultimate refuge for a friend.
हिंदी अनुवाद
धनी हो या निर्धन, दुखी हो या सुखी, निर्दोष हो या सदोष (दोषी)—मित्र ही (मित्र के लिए) परम गति (सर्वोच्च आश्रय) होता है।
English Commentary
This is one of the most profound definitions of friendship in literature. Sugriva asserts that friendship transcends circumstances (rich/poor, happy/sad) and, crucially, moral judgment (innocent/guilty). The phrase Sadoshah ca (even if guilty/flawed) is striking. It implies that a true friend offers sanctuary (Parama Gati) even when the world condemns you. This unconditional acceptance is what Sugriva seeks from Rama, acknowledging his own imperfections while relying on Rama’s shelter. It establishes the friend as the ultimate emotional and physical refuge.

यह मित्रता की पराकाष्ठा है। सुग्रीव कहते हैं कि मित्रता शर्तों पर (Conditional) नहीं होती। 'सदोषः च' (दोषी होने पर भी) वाक्यांश अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। दुनिया अच्छे लोगों का साथ देती है, लेकिन सच्चा मित्र तब भी साथ खड़ा रहता है जब आप गलत हों या आपसे गलती हुई हो। मित्र ही 'परमा गति' (अंतिम सहारा) है। यह श्लोक सुग्रीव की असुरक्षा को भी दर्शाता है—शायद उन्हें लगता है कि उनसे अतीत में गलतियाँ हुई हैं, और वे चाहते हैं कि राम उन्हें उन दोषों के बावजूद स्वीकार करें।
