वाली नाम मम भ्राता ज्येष्ठः शत्रु निषूदनः ।
पितुः बहुमतः नित्यम् मम च अपि तथा पुरा ॥ ॥४-९-१॥
Vālī nāma mama bhrātā jyeṣṭhaḥ śatru niṣūdanaḥ । Pituḥ bahumataḥ nityam mama ca api tathā purā ॥ ॥4-9-1॥
Translation
My elder brother named Vali is a destroyer of enemies. In the past, he was always highly respected/beloved by our father, and by me as well.

वाली नाम का मेरा बड़ा भाई शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाला है। पहले वह पिता को बहुत प्रिय था और मुझे भी नित्य वैसा ही प्रिय था।
English Commentary
Sugriva begins his narrative with dignity, acknowledging Vali’s status as the elder brother and a warrior (shatru nishudanah). He establishes that the relationship was originally founded on love and respect, mirroring the ideal fraternal bond. सुग्रीव अपनी कथा का आरंभ वाली के प्रति सम्मान व्यक्त करते हुए करते हैं। वे स्वीकार करते हैं कि वाली स्वभाव से दुष्ट नहीं था; वह पिता का प्रिय और सुग्रीव का आदरणीय था। यह दर्शाता है कि सुग्रीव के मन में आज भी भाई के प्रति पुराना प्रेम कहीं न कहीं दबा हुआ है। यह संघर्ष सत्ता के लालच से नहीं, बल्कि परिस्थितियों की विडंबना से उपजा है।
