Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पितरि उपरते तस्मिन् ज्येष्ठो अयम् इति मंत्रिभिः ।
कपीनाम् ईश्वरो राज्ये कृतः परम सम्मतः ॥ ॥४-९-२॥
Pitari uparate tasmin jyeṣṭho ayam iti mantribhiḥ । Kapīnām īśvaro rājye kṛtaḥ parama sammataḥ ॥ ॥4-9-2॥
Translation
When our father passed away, considering that he was the eldest, the ministers made him the lord of the monkeys in the kingdom with full consensus.
हिंदी अनुवाद
पिता (ऋक्षरजा) के स्वर्गवासी होने पर, 'यह ज्येष्ठ (बड़ा) है' ऐसा विचार करके मंत्रियों ने सबकी सहमति से उसे वानर राज्य का स्वामी बना दिया।
English Commentary
Sugriva validates the legitimacy of Vali’s kingship. Upon their father's death, the transition of power followed the law of primogeniture (eldest son succeeds) and was ratified by the council of ministers. Sugriva presents this to show he respected the hierarchy and had no subversive intent. He paints himself as a loyal subject from the very beginning.

सुग्रीव स्पष्ट करते हैं कि वाली का राज्याभिषेक नियमानुसार और सर्वसम्मति से हुआ था। मंत्रियों ने ज्येष्ठता के आधार पर उसे चुना था और सुग्रीव को इस पर कोई आपत्ति नहीं थी। यह श्लोक सुग्रीव की निर्दोषता सिद्ध करता है—उन्होंने कभी गद्दी हथियाने की कोशिश नहीं की थी। उत्तराधिकार का संक्रमण शांतिपूर्ण था।
