अहम् तु अवगतः बुद्ध्या चिह्नैः तैः भ्रातरम् हतम् ।
पिधाय च बिल द्वारम् शिलया गिरि मात्रया ॥ ॥४-९-१९॥
Aham tu avagataḥ buddhyā cihnaiḥ taiḥ bhrātaram hatam |
Pidhāya ca bila dvāram śilayā giri mātrayā ॥4-9-19॥
Translation
Concluding by my intellect based on those signs that my brother was killed, I covered the entrance of the cave with a rock the size of a mountain.

उन चिह्नों से अपनी बुद्धि द्वारा भाई को मारा गया समझकर, मैंने पर्वत के समान विशाल शिला से बिल का द्वार बंद कर दिया।
English Commentary
Sugriva explains the reasoning behind blocking the cave. Based on the 'signs' (blood, demon roars, Vali's silence), his intellect (Buddhya) concluded Vali was dead. Blocking the exit with a mountain-sized rock was a strategic containment measure to prevent the victorious demon from escaping and destroying the kingdom. It was an act of protection for the people, not an act of malice against Vali.

यह रामायण के सबसे विवादास्पद कार्यों में से एक है। सुग्रीव ने द्वार क्यों बंद किया? इसलिए नहीं कि वाली बाहर न आ सके, बल्कि इसलिए कि वह असुर, जिसने वाली जैसे योद्धा को मार डाला, बाहर आकर किष्किन्धा का विनाश न कर दे। यह एक रक्षात्मक कदम था। 'गिरि मात्रया' (पहाड़ जैसी) शिला का उपयोग यह सुनिश्चित करने के लिए था कि असुर कैद रहे।
