शोकार्तः च उदकम् कृत्वा किष्किन्धाम् आगतः सखे ।
गूहमानस्य मे तत्त्वम् यत्नतः मंत्रिभिः श्रुतम् ॥ ॥४-९-२०॥
Śokārtaḥ ca udakam kṛtvā kiṣkindhām āgataḥ sakhe |
Gūhamānasya me tattvam yatnataḥ maṃtribhiḥ śrutam ॥4-9-20॥
Translation
Overcome with grief, I performed the water rites (for the dead) and returned to Kishkindha, O friend. Although I tried diligently to hide the truth, the ministers eventually heard about it.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सखा (राम)! शोक से व्याकुल होकर मैंने (वाली के लिए) जलांजलि दी और किष्किन्धा लौट आया। यद्यपि मैंने उस सच्चाई को छिपाने का बहुत प्रयास किया, फिर भी मंत्रियों ने उसे सुन (जान) लिया।
English Commentary
Sugriva performed the funeral rites (Udakam) symbolically at the site, confirming his genuine belief in Vali's death. He returned to Kishkindha in grief (Shokartah), not triumph. He tried to suppress the news (Guhamanasya) likely to prevent panic or chaos in the kingdom, but the keen ministers discovered the truth. This sequence proves he didn't rush back to claim the throne publicly.

सुग्रीव ने वाली का अंतिम संस्कार (जलांजलि/उदकम्) वहीं कर दिया था, जो साबित करता है कि उसे वाली की मृत्यु का पूर्ण विश्वास था। वापस आकर उसने खबर छिपाई क्योंकि वह राज्य में भय नहीं फैलाना चाहता था और शायद उसे डर था कि बिना राजा के राज्य असुरक्षित हो जाएगा। लेकिन मंत्रियों ने सत्य का पता लगा लिया। 'सखे' संबोधन राम के साथ उसकी बढ़ती घनिष्ठता को दर्शाता है।
