Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मायावी नाम तेजस्वी पूर्वजो दुन्दुभेः सुतः ।
तेन तस्य महद् वैरम् वालिनः स्त्री कृतम् पुरा ॥ ॥४-९-४॥
Māyāvī nāma tejasvī pūrvajo dundubheḥ sutaḥ । Tena tasya mahad vairam vālinaḥ strī kṛtam purā ॥ ॥4-9-4॥
Translation
There was a powerful demon named Mayavi, the elder son of Dundubhi. He had a long-standing and great enmity with Vali over a woman.
हिंदी अनुवाद
दुन्दुभी का बड़ा बेटा 'मायावी' नाम का एक तेजस्वी दानव था। किसी स्त्री को लेकर पहले से ही उसका वाली के साथ भारी वैर (दुश्मनी) था।
English Commentary
The catalyst for the conflict is introduced: the demon Mayavi. The text notes that the root of their feud was a woman (strī kṛtam), a recurring motif in the epic. This creates a parallel to Rama’s own situation (war for Sita). Sugriva provides this backstory to explain why Vali was so easily provoked—the enmity was personal and pre-existing.

कहानी में खलनायक 'मायावी' का प्रवेश होता है। वैर का कारण 'स्त्री' थी। रामायण में अक्सर युद्धों का मूल कारण 'स्त्री का अपमान' या 'अपहरण' ही रहा है (जैसे सीता हरण)। यहाँ यह उल्लेख करना प्रासंगिक है कि मायावी और वाली के बीच पुराना हिसाब-किताब था, जिसका भुगतान करने वह उस रात आया था।
