ततो रावणनीतायाः सीतायाः शत्रुकर्शनः ।
इयेष पदमन्वेष्टुं चारणाचरिते पथि ॥५-१-१॥
tato rāvaṇanītāyāḥ sītāyāḥ śatrukarśanaḥ |
iyeṣa padamanveṣṭuṃ cāraṇācarite pathi ॥5-1-1॥
Translation
Thereafter, Hanuman, the destroyer of enemies, desired to travel via the path frequented by Charanas (the sky) to search for the location of Sita, who had been abducted by Ravana.

तदनन्तर शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले हनुमान जी ने रावण द्वारा हरण की गई सीता के स्थान को खोजने के लिए चारणों (आकाश में विचरने वाले देव विशेष) द्वारा सेवित मार्ग (आकाश मार्ग) से जाने की इच्छा की।
English Commentary
This opening verse of the Sundara Kanda sets the tone for the heroic exploits to follow. The epithet 'Shatrukarshana' (destroyer of enemies) is deliberate, establishing Hanuman's capability not just as a messenger, but as a warrior capable of neutralizing threats, foreshadowing his encounters in Lanka. His choice of the 'path of the Charanas' (the sky) signifies a transcendency of human limitations; he is about to undertake a feat that belongs to the realm of celestial beings. The verse captures the precise moment where contemplation transforms into active volition ('iyesha' - he desired/willed). It highlights the gravity of the mission: the recovery of Sita, an act that requires navigating the highest path, literally and metaphorically.
