दुष्करं निष्प्रतिद्वन्द्वं चिकीर्षन् कर्म वानरः ।
समुदग्रशिरोग्रीवो गवांपतिरिवाबभौ ॥५-१-२॥
duṣkaraṃ niṣpratidvandvaṃ cikīrṣan karma vānaraḥ |
samudagraśirogrīvo gavāmpatirivābabhau ॥5-1-2॥
Translation
Desiring to perform that difficult task which has no equal, the Vanara (Hanuman), with his head and neck raised high, shone like a lord of bulls.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस असंभव और बाधारहित (जिसका कोई मुकाबला न कर सके) कार्य को करने की इच्छा रखते हुए, वह वानरवीर हनुमान अपनी गर्दन और सिर को ऊपर उठाए हुए, साँड़ों के स्वामी (वृषभ) की भांति सुशोभित हुए।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs powerful zoomorphic imagery here, comparing Hanuman to a 'lord of bulls' (Gavaampati). This simile conveys raw power, virility, and an imposing physical presence. The posture of the raised head and neck indicates readiness and pride in one's capability, devoid of hesitation. The task is described as 'nishpratidvandvam'—literally meaning without a rival or opponent, suggesting that the feat of crossing the ocean is unparalleled and solitary. It underscores the magnitude of the undertaking; Hanuman stands alone in his capacity to execute this mission, highlighting his unique status among the Vanara host gathered on the shore.

यहाँ महर्षि वाल्मीकि ने हनुमान जी की शारीरिक भाषा और आत्मविश्वास का अद्भुत चित्रण किया है। 'समुदग्रशिरोग्रीवो' (उठाए हुए सिर और गर्दन) का प्रयोग उनकी निर्भीकता और दृढ़ संकल्प को दर्शाता है। उपमा 'गवांपति' (वृषभ/साँड़) से दी गई है, जो शक्ति, पौरुष और अदम्य ऊर्जा का प्रतीक है। 'निष्प्रतिद्वन्द्वं' शब्द इंगित करता है कि जो कार्य (समुद्र लंघन) वे करने जा रहे हैं, वह अद्वितीय है; उस समय और कोई भी वानर उस कार्य को करने का साहस नहीं कर पा रहा था। यह श्लोक हनुमान जी के मानसिक और शारीरिक, दोनों प्रकार के तेज को अभिव्यक्त करता है।
