राक्षसं रूपमास्थाय सुघोरं पर्वतोपमम् ।
दंष्ट्रकरालं पिङ्गाक्षं वक्त्रं कृत्वा नभःसमम् ॥ ॥५-१-१४७॥
rākṣasaṃ rūpamāsthāya sughoraṃ parvatopamam |
daṃṣṭrakarālaṃ piṅgākṣaṃ vaktraṃ kṛtvā nabhaḥsamam ॥5-1-147॥
Translation
"Assume a terrible Rakshasa form, mountain-like, with fearful teeth, copper-colored eyes, and a mouth as vast as the sky."

"आप पर्वत के समान विशाल, भयानक राक्षसी रूप धारण करें, जिसमें भयंकर दाढ़ें, पीली आँखें और आकाश के समान विशाल मुख हो।"
English Commentary
The celestial beings dictate the specific terrifying aesthetics Surasa must adopt to effectively test Hanuman. She is to take a form that is parvatopamam (mountain-like) with a mouth as vast as the sky (nabhaḥsamam). The imagery of fearful fangs and yellow/copper eyes is intended to simulate the demonic encounters Hanuman will face in Lanka. This is a stress test; if Hanuman acts out of fear or panic here, he would be unfit for the mission in Ravana's kingdom. The scale of the form—spanning the sky—is meant to physically block his path, forcing him to engage rather than merely fly past.

देवताओं ने सुरसा को निर्देश दिया कि वह कैसा रूप धारण करे ताकि परीक्षा वास्तविक लगे। उन्हें एक सौम्य देवी के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि एक भयावह राक्षसी के रूप में प्रकट होना था। 'पर्वतोपमम्' (पर्वत के समान) और 'नभःसमम्' (आकाश जैसा विशाल मुख) जैसे विशेषण बताते हैं कि बाधा का स्वरूप विराट होना चाहिए। लंका राक्षसों की नगरी है, अतः हनुमान जी को वहाँ पहुंचने से पहले भयानक और विकराल स्वरूपों से निपटने का अभ्यास होना आवश्यक था। यह रूप हनुमान जी के साहस (अभय) की परीक्षा के लिए रचा गया था, क्योंकि भयभीत मन कभी भी महान कार्य सिद्ध नहीं कर सकता।
