Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
बलमिच्छामहे ज्ञातुं भूयश्चास्य पराक्रमम् ।
त्वां विजेष्यत्युपायेन विषादं वा गमिष्यति ॥ ॥५-१-१४८॥
balamicchāmahe jñātuṃ bhūyaścāsya parākramam |
tvāṃ vijeṣyatyupāyena viṣādaṃ vā gamiṣyati ॥5-1-148॥
Translation
"We wish to ascertain his strength and valour once again. Will he defeat you through stratagem, or will he fall into despair?"

"हम इनके बल और पराक्रम को फिर से जानना चाहते हैं। क्या ये आपको उपाय (बुद्धि) से जीतेंगे अथवा विषाद (निराशा) को प्राप्त होंगे?"
English Commentary
This verse captures the core criteria of the Devas' test. The binary outcome presented is: victory through upāya (stratagem/means) or failure through viṣāda (despair/depression). In Sanskrit literature, upāya often refers to the use of intellect and diplomacy over brute force. The gods want to know if a massive, seemingly insurmountable blockage will break Hanuman’s morale (viṣāda) or trigger his ingenuity. It reinforces the idea that a true hero (and specifically a Duta/messenger) requires mental resilience and strategic thinking just as much as physical prowess.

यह श्लोक सुरसा प्रसंग का मूल उद्देश्य स्पष्ट करता है। देवता केवल शारीरिक 'बल' नहीं, बल्कि 'उपाय' (बुद्धि/युक्ति) देखना चाहते थे। वे देखना चाहते थे कि क्या असंभव प्रतीत होने वाली बाधा के सामने हनुमान जी 'विषाद' (हताशा) में डूब जाते हैं, या अपनी बुद्धि का प्रयोग कर मार्ग निकालते हैं। संकट के समय जो व्यक्ति निराश हो जाता है, वह कार्य सिद्ध नहीं कर सकता। यहाँ 'भूयश्च' (फिर से) शब्द का प्रयोग बताता है कि मैनाक पर्वत के प्रसंग में वे हनुमान की विनम्रता देख चुके थे, अब वे उनकी प्रत्युत्पन्नमति (presence of mind) देखना चाहते थे।
