एवमुक्ता हनुमता सुरसा कामरूपिणी ।
अब्रवीन्नातिवर्तेत कश्चिदेष वरो मम ॥५-१-१५७॥
evamuktā hanumatā surasā kāmarūpiṇī |
abravīnnātivarteta kaścideṣa varo mama ॥5-1-157॥
Translation
Even after being addressed thus by Hanuman, Surasa, capable of changing her form at will, said, "No one can surpass me and pass; this is the boon granted to me."
हिंदी अनुवाद
हनुमान जी द्वारा ऐसा (विनम्रतापूर्वक) कहे जाने पर भी, इच्छानुसार रूप धारण करने वाली सुरसा ने कहा— "कोई भी मेरा उल्लंघन करके (मुझसे बचकर) नहीं जा सकता, यह मेरा वरदान है।"
English Commentary
Despite Hanuman's diplomacy and respectful pleading, Surasa stands firm. The epithet kāmarūpiṇī (shape-shifter) foreshadows the nature of the upcoming duel—it will be a contest of forms, not weapons. Surasa invokes the irrevocability of a divine boon (vara). In the cosmic legal system of the Ramayana, a boon granted by a supreme deity (like Brahma) functions as a law of nature; it cannot simply be ignored. Surasa represents an absolute obstacle that cannot be bypassed through negotiation. This forces Hanuman to switch strategies from diplomacy to a display of power and wit, setting the stage for the famous size-changing contest.

यहाँ सुरसा और हनुमान के बीच संघर्ष की स्थिति बन जाती है। हनुमान जी ने साम (विनय), दान (समय मांगना) और भेद (तर्क) का प्रयोग किया, लेकिन सुरसा अपने वरदान पर अडिग रहीं। 'कामरूपिणी' शब्द का अर्थ है कि वह अपनी इच्छा से कोई भी रूप धारण कर सकती हैं, जो आने वाली चुनौती की कठिनाई को दर्शाता है। सुरसा ने स्पष्ट कर दिया कि यह उनकी व्यक्तिगत इच्छा नहीं, बल्कि 'वरः' (वरदान) की मर्यादा का प्रश्न है। ब्रह्मा जी के वरदान के अनुसार, जो भी उनके मार्ग में आएगा, उसे उनके मुख में प्रवेश करना ही होगा। यह नियति की अनिवार्यता है जिसे टाला नहीं जा सकता, केवल अपनी बुद्धि से पार किया जा सकता है।
