तं प्रयान्तं समुद्वीक्ष्य सुरसा वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
बलं जिज्ञासमाना वै नागमाता हनूमतः ॥५-१-१५८॥
taṃ prayāntaṃ samudvīkṣya surasā vākyamabravīt |
balaṃ jijñāsamānā vai nāgamātā hanūmataḥ ॥5-1-158॥
Translation
Observing him trying to proceed, Surasa, the Mother of Nagas, desirous of knowing his strength, spoke these words.

हनुमान को आगे बढ़ते देख, नागमाता सुरसा ने उनके बल को जानने की इच्छा से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse acts as a directorial note, clarifying Surasa's internal motivation. She is not acting out of malice but out of jijñāsamānā (curiosity/desire to know). She observes Hanuman continuing his flight (prayāntaṃ) and decides to press him further. The phrase Nāgamātā (Mother of Serpents) reminds us of her ancient and powerful lineage. The test is specifically regarding his balam (strength/power). The interaction transitions here from a roadblock negotiation to an active trial of strength. It implies that true potential is often revealed only when one is pushed against an unyielding barrier.

इस श्लोक में सुरसा की मंशा स्पष्ट होती है। वह हनुमान जी को मारना नहीं चाहती थीं, बल्कि 'बलं जिज्ञासमाना' (बल जानने की इच्छुक) थीं। यह देवताओं द्वारा नियोजित परीक्षा थी। जब हनुमान जी ने देखा कि सुरसा नहीं मान रही हैं, तो उन्होंने आगे बढ़ने का प्रयास किया ('प्रयान्तं'), जिस पर सुरसा ने उन्हें फिर से टोका। एक गुरु या परीक्षक की भांति, सुरसा हनुमान जी की क्षमताओं को चरम सीमा तक परखना चाहती थीं। यह प्रसंग बताता है कि जीवन में आने वाली बाधाएं अक्सर हमारी क्षमता को मापने और उसे निखारने के लिए आती हैं। नागमाता होने के नाते, उनमें मातृत्व और गंभीरता दोनों का समावेश है।
