Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
देवराजगजाक्रान्ते चन्द्रसूर्यपथे शिवे ।
विताने जीवलोकस्य वितते ब्रह्मनिर्मिते ॥५-१-१७९॥
devarājagajākrānte candrasūryapathe śive |
vitāne jīvalokasya vitate brahmanirmite ॥5-1-179॥
Translation
Trodden by the elephant of the King of Gods, the auspicious path of the sun and moon; the expanded canopy of the living world created by Brahma.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जो देवराज इंद्र के हाथी (ऐरावत) के विचरण से चिह्नित है; जो सूर्य और चन्द्रमा का कल्याणकारी मार्ग है; जो जीवलोक (संसार) के लिए ब्रह्मा द्वारा निर्मित एक विशाल चंदोवे (Canopy/Tent) के समान है।
English Commentary
A beautiful metaphor describes the sky as a vitāna (canopy/awning) stretching over the jīvaloka (world of living beings), constructed by Brahma himself. It protects and encompasses earthly life. It is the patha (road) for the luminaries (Sun and Moon) and the playground of Indra's elephant. The word śive (auspicious) indicates that this path brings order and light to the world. Hanuman is traveling along the very ceiling of the world.

आकाश को 'जीवलोकस्य विताने' कहा गया है, अर्थात यह संसार के ऊपर तना हुआ एक विशाल तंबू (canopy) है जिसे स्वयं ब्रह्मा ने बनाया है। यह सूर्य और चन्द्रमा का 'शिवे' (कल्याणकारी) मार्ग है। 'देवराजगजाक्रान्ते' बताता है कि यहाँ इंद्र का हाथी घूमता है, जो बादलों का प्रतीक है। वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ आकाश को केवल खाली जगह नहीं, बल्कि एक रक्षक छत (Protective roof) के रूप में चित्रित करते हैं जो पृथ्वी के जीवन को सुरक्षित रखता है।
