Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्य सा कायमुद्वीक्ष्य वर्धमानं महाकपेः ।
वक्त्रं प्रसारयामास पातालान्तरसन्निभम् ॥ ॥५-१-१८९॥
Tasya sā kāyamudvīkṣya vardhamānaṃ mahākapeḥ |
Vaktraṃ prasārayāmāsa pātālāntarasannibham ॥5-1-189॥
Translation
Seeing the body of the great monkey expanding, she opened her mouth wide, resembling the interior of the netherworld (Patala).

उस महाकपि के शरीर को बढ़ता हुआ देखकर, उसने (सिंहिका ने) पाताल की गुहा के समान अपना मुख फैला दिया।
English Commentary
This verse depicts the escalation of the confrontation. Simhika responds to Hanuman's expansion not with fear, but by increasing the size of her maw to accommodate him. The comparison of her mouth to Pātālāntara (the abyss of the underworld) suggests a terrifying, cavernous void intended to consume the divine messenger. This reaction was exactly what Hanuman anticipated; he induced her to overextend herself.

जैसे-जैसे हनुमान जी का आकार बढ़ा, सिंहिका ने भी उन्हें निगलने के लिए अपना मुख फैलाया। वाल्मीकि जी ने उसके मुख की उपमा 'पातालान्तरसन्निभम्' से दी है, अर्थात पाताल लोक के गहरे विवर जैसा। यह उसकी असीमित भूख और विनाशकारी क्षमता को दर्शाता है। हनुमान जी की चाल सफल हो रही थी; वे चाहते थे कि सिंहिका अपना मुख अपनी अधिकतम क्षमता तक खोले, ताकि वे उसके मर्म स्थलों तक पहुँच सकें।
