Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शिरोभिः पृथुभिः सर्पा व्यक्तस्वस्तिकलक्षणैः ।
वमन्तः पावकं घोरं ददंशुर्दशनैः शिलाः ॥५-१-१९॥
śirobhiḥ pṛthubhiḥ sarpā vyaktasvastikalakṣaṇaiḥ |
vamantaḥ pāvakaṃ ghoraṃ dadaṃśurdaśanaiḥ śilāḥ ॥5-1-19॥
Translation
Serpents with broad hoods marked clearly with the Swastika sign, vomiting terrible fire, bit the rocks with their fangs.

विशाल फनों वाले और स्पष्ट स्वस्तिक के चिह्नों से युक्त सर्पों ने, घोर अग्नि उगलते हुए, (पर्वत के दबने के क्रोध/पीड़ा में) अपने दांतों से शिलाओं को डस लिया।
English Commentary
The imagery becomes even more intense with the reaction of the Nagas (serpents). These are distinguished serpents, identified by the 'Swastika' marks on their hoods, a sign of their potency and semi-divine status. In their distress caused by the crushing weight, they lash out instinctively. Since they cannot perceive the source of the pressure (Hanuman), they attack the immediate proximity—the rocks. The phrase 'Vamantah pavakam' (vomiting fire) suggests their venom is so virulent it manifests as heat or flame. It portrays a scene of chaotic fury where even powerful beings are rendered helpless by superior force.

पाताल और गुफाओं में रहने वाले नागों की प्रतिक्रिया यहाँ वर्णित है। ये सामान्य सांप नहीं हैं; ये 'व्यक्तस्वस्तिकलक्षणैः' हैं, अर्थात उच्च कोटि के नाग जिनके फनों पर स्वस्तिक का चिह्न है। अत्यधिक दबाव के कारण वे क्रोधित और भ्रमित हो गए हैं और अपने शत्रु (हनुमान) को न देख पाने के कारण, वे उस पर्वत की शिलाओं को ही डस रहे हैं जो उन्हें दबा रही हैं। 'वमन्तः पावकं' (आग उगलते हुए) यह दर्शाता है कि उनका विष कितना उष्ण और घातक है। यह उनकी असहायता और क्रोध का चित्रण है।
