तास्तदा सविषैर्दष्टाः कुपितैस्तैर्महाशिलाः।
जज्ज्वलुः पावकोद्दीप्ता बिभिदुश्च सहस्रधा ॥५-१-२०॥
tāstadā saviṣairdaṣṭāḥ kupitaistairmahāśilāḥ |
jajjavaluḥ pāvakoddīptā bibhiduśca sahasradhā ॥5-1-20॥
Translation
Then, those massive rocks, bitten by the angry and venomous serpents, burst into flames and shattered into a thousand pieces.

तब उन क्रोधित और विषैले सर्पों द्वारा डसी गई वे विशाल शिलाएं अग्नि से प्रज्वलित हो उठीं और हजारों टुकड़ों में टूट गईं।
English Commentary
This verse creates a fantastical image of chemical/alchemical destruction. The venom of the serpents is so potent that it acts like an explosive or super-acid, causing the rocks to not only catch fire but to disintegrate into thousands of fragments ('sahasradha'). This highlights the dangerous nature of the Mahendra mountain's inhabitants, thereby elevating Hanuman's status—he is dominating an environment that is itself deadly. The shattering rocks add to the cacophony and debris, creating a chaotic tableau surrounding the poised hero.

यह श्लोक नागों के विष की संहारक शक्ति का अतिशयोक्तिपूर्ण किंतु प्रभावशाली वर्णन है। विष की गर्मी इतनी थी कि पत्थर भी जल उठे ('जज्ज्वलुः') और टूट कर बिखर गए ('बिभिदुश्च सहस्रधा')। यह वर्णन हनुमान जी के कार्य की कठिनाई और खतरे को भी बढ़ाता है—वे ऐसे स्थान पर खड़े हैं जहाँ पत्थर भी विष से पिघल रहे हैं, फिर भी वे अविचल हैं। यह काव्य में 'अद्भुत रस' का संचार करता है। पत्थरों का टूटना और जलना उस विध्वंस का हिस्सा है जो नवनिर्माण (सीता की खोज) से पहले आवश्यक है।
