Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मयि कौतूहलं कुर्युरिति मेने महाकपिः ।
ततः शरीरं संक्षिप्य तन्महीधरसन्निभम् ॥ ॥५-१-२०५॥
mayi kautūhalaṃ kuryuriti mene mahākapiḥ । tataḥ śarīraṃ saṃkṣipya tanmahīdharasannibham ॥ ॥5-1-205॥
Translation
The great Vanara thought, "They (the Rakshasas) would become curious about me." Therefore, he contracted his body, which was as massive as a mountain.
हिंदी अनुवाद
महाकपि हनुमान ने विचार किया कि (मेरे इस विशाल रूप को देखकर) राक्षस मेरे विषय में कौतूहल (उत्सुकता/संदेह) करेंगे। इसलिए उन्होंने अपने पर्वत के समान विशाल शरीर को सिकोड़कर छोटा कर लिया।
English Commentary
This verse highlights Hanuman's situational awareness and mastery over spycraft (Chara-neeti). Despite his immense power, he recognizes that stealth is currently more valuable than strength. The term Kautūhalam here implies alarming curiosity that would compromise his mission before it begins. A massive form invites attack; a smaller form allows for infiltration. By shrinking his Mahīdharasannibham (mountain-like) body, he demonstrates that true greatness lies in adaptability and the willingness to minimize oneself for a higher cause.

यह श्लोक हनुमान जी की कूटनीतिक बुद्धिमत्ता (Diplomatic intelligence) का प्रमाण है। यद्यपि वे अजेय हैं, फिर भी वे जानते हैं कि एक गुप्तचर का प्राथमिक धर्म 'गोपनीयता' (Secrecy) है। यदि वे विशाल रूप में उतरते, तो लंका में हलचल मच जाती और 'कौतूहल' उत्पन्न होता, जिससे शत्रु सतर्क हो जाते। 'कौतूहल' शब्द यहाँ केवल जिज्ञासा नहीं, बल्कि 'अवांछित ध्यान' (Unwanted attention) के संदर्भ में प्रयुक्त है। अपने अहंकार का त्याग कर, कार्य की सिद्धि के लिए स्वयं को छोटा कर लेना एक महान व्यक्तित्व (महाकपि) की पहचान है।
